The People of the Sun Middle Passage Collective is a community based organization established in 1989 to ensure that the ancestors who lost their lives in the Middle Passage would be acknowledged, named, and honored. The Collective has been committed to holding an annual tribute to the Ancestors of the Middle Passage to raise people’s consciousness about modern slavery and to raise the required funds to erect a permanent monument commemorating the Africans who died as a result of the Atlantic Slave Trade. The Collective focuses on educating people about the past so that the past will never be forgotten nor repeated.

The People of the Sun Middle Passage Collective have over the last 12 years broadened their work beyond conceptualizing and organizing the Annual Tribute to the Ancestors of the Middle Passage. While the focus and the mission to educate central Brooklyn residents about the past continues to take a central place in the Collective, educating the community about issues that affect their present daily lives has also become a vital part of the Collective’s work. Issues ranging from the environment, health, personal safety to making political and social commitments are all now considered relevant to the Collective’s goal of raising citizen consciousness and activism.

The People of the Sun Middle Passage Collective develops, organizes, and sponsors various and multiple programs throughout the course of a year which address all of these issues and others. The culminating event of the year and its various programs and focuses continues to be the Annual Tribute to the Ancestors of the Middle Passage.
